Overall, they all seem very personal. This is something that I think my rough draft is lacking, so I think (shockingly enough) I’m going to change my topic.
“Superman and Me”
- I love the structure of this essay, how one personal topic flows to the next.
- It seems like there’s a little bit of the concept missing for me. Like I can fill in the blanks and stuff (which maybe the author wants me to do) but I wanted the author to go more into how the arrogance and confidence was saving his life.
“The Decline and Fall of the English Major”
- This topic is super close to me because I feel with a documentary major, it is the same response that I hear all the time. Even among Dodge students, Doc is kind of pushed aside a lot of the time because it doesn’t ensure a profit.
- The structure is nice. It’s something that doesn’t really stick out to me, which indicates that the transitions are seamless.
- It also has a clear objective. The author wants to discuss why the decline of English majors has a detrimental effect to society as a whole.
“Only Daughter”
- This essay, like “Superman and Me,” is much more narrative.
- It’s an extremely powerful commentary on how women in society are expected to marry rich rather than pursue a career of their own.
- It has a nice beginning, middle, and end.
“DAD”
- Literally brought tears to my eyes.
- A big emphasis on pathos rhetoric, the author made us love his father as much as he did.
- It has a nice analysis of the idea that our parents aren’t perfect, but neither are we.
