I want to write about the cup half full half empty stuff is just BS.
WHY are you compelled to write this story?
I feel like I have a really positive outlook on life, but not because I “look on the bright side” but because I’m fully aware of my situation and taking it all in, the good and the bad.
WHAT is your (major) driving point? Are there ancillary (minor) points that you intend to make as well?
Try your best to look at your reality without distortion. If you don’t like something about it, then do your best to change it (i.e. regardless if the glass is half empty or half full, get more water)
WHO is your specific, target audience? What other audiences might you engage with this story?
Just anybody who will read it I suppose. I could see it being for the people who post too many cup is half full quotes on all social media platforms.
WHAT is your rhetorical situation and strategy? Here, cite as many possibilities that you can of the following appeals: pathos—ethos—logos. Explain in each case why the appeals that you cite are appropriate to your story. Does your strategy construct persuasion toward an argument, an idea, an opinion, a redesign—or perhaps a combination of these persuasions?
I think explaining things with logic will help take away the typical cliché of cup half empty/full. Then I’ll bring in personal examples of my life. Then end with it’s okay to be positive even with the glass half empty.

WHAT aspect, address or approach of this essay qualifies it as a “personal essay” in your opinion?
It’s strictly my opinion about something that is a part of me and in my head.
HOW do you see the personal essay form of composition differing from the open letter form of composition?
The personal essay seems more focused on the writer than the audience. The open letter was written to somebody about xyz. The personal essay is just a peep into the author’s mind.
I’m probably just stupid but I’m unsure on what you’re trying to talk about because it seems like this topic really depends on the subjective experience on other people and your own. Could you define it more clearly?
What could help to clarify this idea would be the specific examples from your own life that you bring into the picture. Your remark that there’s just to much of this “Glass half empty, glass half full” quote on social media is a striking rhetorical situation that can serve as what makes you want to speak about this topic. Basically you’re tired of seeing this mantra, and what does it mean anyway?
