First Draft – Memoir

  • The time I told my mom I was gay | This open communication with my mom wasn’t a bad thing, but it did change our relationship permanently.
    • Time line would be about the feelings leading up, during and after.
    • Location is in suburbia in my childhood home. My mom and I love to cook and so we spend most of our time together in the kitchen. I could note the towel that she always had over her shoulder, the cookbooks that had stains and markups all inside of them. Our family dog would always lay with us as well. He mirrored our feelings, getting upset when we got upset, etc.

  1. I think this is an awesome topic for this essay. You should think of a couple more just so you have some to fall back on if this topic doesnt work too well for you. I think you could be very descriptive with this piece, and I really like how you started those descriptions already (like the dog mirroring your feelings).

  2. I already like where this essay is going. The details you include in just the first draft are great and I believe you will be able to expand on those. I like the idea of describing your feelings throughout the timeline of this event and it will give the readers a great understanding of how you felt as well. Maybe even include how you think your relationship has changed with your mom, to broaden how this event has impacted your life. Looking forward to reading the next draft.

  3. This particular conversation is a definite fulcrum – and it would work great if narrated slowly, in scenic mode. Within the conversation there can be segments of backstory (what lead up to this conversation), and as Elliot mentions what would come after the conversation?

In this way the conversation itself can become a shell that holds the past before this particular past experience as well as the past that come after – and includes where you are now.
